20 Screen-Free Afternoon Activities for Burnt-Out Parents

September 8, 2026 · By Jenny Wilson, Founder & Creator of the Wonder Family Framework

A basket of screen-free boredom fixes

The hardest hour to fill without a screen is always the same one — mid-afternoon, everyone tired, nothing planned. This list exists specifically for that hour, tested on our own worst afternoons, not just the easy mornings.

Quiet Options (For the Low-Energy Afternoons)

1. A puzzle, started together, finished alone. 2. Audiobook plus a coloring page. 3. A “quiet box” of small building toys, saved just for this hour. 4. Sorting a button or bead collection by color. 5. A calm-down jar to shake and watch settle. 6. Looking through old family photos together. 7. A simple lacing or threading craft.

Active Options (For the Restless Afternoons)

8. An indoor obstacle course from couch cushions. 9. A dance-freeze session with any music on hand. 10. A backyard scavenger hunt, five minutes to plan it. 11. A pillow fort building project. 12. Balloon volleyball over a string. 13. A simple yoga or stretching video, no screen needed if you know a few poses. 14. Jumping jacks or a silly movement game between tasks.

Together Options (For When You Need to Be Part of It)

15. A board game, even a short round. 16. Baking something simple together. 17. A “restaurant” pretend-play session with menus. 18. Teaching each other a new card game. 19. A joint art project on one big shared paper. 20. Just sitting outside together with nothing planned at all.

How We Actually Use This

This list lives taped inside a kitchen cabinet, not memorized. On the hardest afternoons, nobody has the energy to think of something new — having options already written down removes that one extra barrier.

What This Isn’t

This isn’t a screen-free household — some afternoons still end with a show, and that’s fine. This list exists for the afternoons we want a different default, not as a rule we never break.

For the fuller philosophy behind this, our Screen-Light Parenting post covers the rest.
