There was a stretch where every kid seemed to be watching something different in a different room, and I couldn’t have told you what any of them were watching. That’s the week we made the change: screens live in one shared room now, never in bedrooms, no exceptions.
Why One Room Changed Everything
It wasn’t really about screen time going down, at least not at first. It was about being able to see what was happening. One room meant I could walk past and actually know what was on, instead of guessing from a hallway.
The Pushback Was Real, Then It Wasn’t
There was some grumbling the first few days, mostly from the kid who’d gotten used to watching in private. It faded faster than I expected, mostly because the rule didn’t waver – it wasn’t a punishment for anything, it was just how things worked now.
What Filled the Gap
Bedrooms without screens turned out to be quieter in a way I hadn’t planned for – more reading, more talking before lights out, less of that glow under a door I used to pretend I hadn’t noticed.
I’m still not consistent about my own phone the way I am about this rule, and I don’t love admitting that, but the one-room rule for the kids has held up regardless.
