A friend once half-teasingly asked if “screen-light” was even a real thing anymore, given how much my kids watch on certain days. It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is that screen-light was never a promise of screen-free. It was never meant to hold up perfectly on the hardest days, and I’ve stopped pretending otherwise.
The Days the Rules Bend
Sick days, travel days, and the one specific week I had a work deadline hanging over me – those are when screens fill in more than usual. For a while I felt like I owed an apology every time that happened. I don’t anymore.
What Stays Fixed Even Then
Even on the hardest days, a couple of things don’t move: screens stay in the one shared room, and the hour before bed stays screen-free. Everything else is allowed to flex. Having two non-negotiables instead of ten made it actually possible to hold onto them when things got hard.
The Part That’s Still Hardest
The hardest part of going screen-light was never really the kids. It was my own phone habits, which are still less consistent than the rules I hold everyone else to. I notice that gap most on the exact days everything else is already stretched thin.
What actually flexes and what doesn’t on our worst days is laid out in The Screen-Light Reset.
