There’s a basket sitting exactly where the remote used to live – a deck of cards, a puzzle, a notebook, nothing fancier than that. It wasn’t a Pinterest project. It was a direct swap: the thing that used to be the automatic answer to “I’m bored” got replaced by a basket of other automatic answers.
Why Location Did More Than Content
What made the basket work wasn’t really what was in it. It was where it sat. Putting it exactly where a hand used to reach for the remote meant the habit had somewhere else to go without anyone having to think about it.
The List Backing It Up
There’s also a list of twenty screen-free afternoon activities taped inside a kitchen cabinet, for the days the basket alone doesn’t cut it. Between the two, “I’m bored” stopped being a problem that landed on me to solve on the spot.
It Doesn’t Win Every Time
Some afternoons the basket gets ignored and the screen wins anyway, and I’ve stopped treating that as a failure of the system. It’s just one tool, not a guarantee.
What’s in our basket, how we chose it, and the full cabinet list are all in The Screen-Light Reset.
