The First Week Was Genuinely Worse
More mistakes, more frustration, one outright refusal to keep going. I almost went back to sitting beside him after day three, convinced I’d made things worse instead of better.
Then Something Shifted, Around Day Ten
He started catching his own mistakes before I ever saw the page. Not because he’d gotten smarter in ten days — because he’d finally had to actually look at his own work instead of relying on me to catch problems in real time.
What I Actually Did Instead of Sitting There
I stayed in the same room, visibly busy with something else, available if genuinely stuck but not watching over his shoulder. Physical presence without active supervision turned out to be the right middle distance — not absent, not hovering.
The Review Happens After, Not During
We go over the finished page together once it’s done, mistakes and all, instead of correcting each one as it happens. Seeing the whole picture of his own work, errors included, taught him more about self-checking than any real-time correction ever did.
What Surprised Me Most
I’d assumed hovering was helping him learn faster. It was actually teaching him to outsource his own error-checking to me, which is the opposite of what independent work is supposed to build.
