How to Reset Your Family Routine After a Rough Week

September 7, 2026 · By Jenny Wilson, Founder & Creator of the Wonder Family Framework

A calm cup of tea and notebook

Sickness, travel, a broken washing machine, and one particularly hard week of my own burnout all landed in the same month once, and by the end of it our routine was completely gone — not bent, just gone. Here’s exactly how we got it back, step by step, instead of starting over from a blank page.

Step 1: Name It Out Loud, Without Shame

“We fell off our routine, and that’s okay” — said plainly, to the kids and to myself. Skipping this step and just quietly restarting left old guilt hanging around; saying it out loud actually closed the door on it.

Step 2: Bring Back One Anchor First, Not All Five

We didn’t try to restart the whole five-block rhythm at once. We brought back just the morning anchor — breakfast together, no screens — and let it stabilize for a few days before adding anything else back.

Step 3: Expect a Worse Version of Normal for a Few Days

The first few days back were rougher than the routine ever was before it broke — more resistance, more complaining. I stopped treating that as proof it wasn’t working and just expected it as the normal cost of restarting.

Step 4: Add the Next Block Only Once the First One Sticks

Focused work came back only after the morning anchor felt solid again, roughly four or five days later. Rebuilding in this order, one block at a time, worked far better than trying to snap back to the full rhythm overnight.

Step 5: Skip the Catch-Up Guilt Entirely

We never tried to make up for the lost days with double work. Whatever didn’t happen during the rough week just didn’t happen, full stop — treating it as a debt to repay would have made the whole restart heavier than it needed to be.

What I’d Tell Myself During the Next Rough Week

The routine breaking wasn’t a failure of the system — it was the system working exactly as intended under real pressure. A rhythm that can be rebuilt is more valuable than one that never bends at all.

For the full daily rhythm behind this, our Building a Homeschool Routine post covers the rest.
