The Week I Threw Out the Kindergarten Curriculum (and What We Did Instead)

September 14, 2026 · By Jenny Wilson, Founder & Creator of the Wonder Family Framework

A curriculum box pushed to the back of a closet

Six weeks into kindergarten, I put the entire boxed curriculum in the closet and didn’t take it back out. Not because it was badly made — because my daughter cried at the table every single morning we opened it, and no amount of “sticking with it” was going to fix that.

Here’s what actually happened that week, and what replaced the curriculum afterward.

The Morning I Finally Admitted It Wasn’t Working

It wasn’t one dramatic moment — it was the sixth identical morning of tears before we’d even opened the workbook. I’d been treating her resistance as something to push through rather than actual information about what wasn’t working.

What I Was Actually Afraid Of

Quitting the curriculum felt like quitting on kindergarten itself, like I was setting her up to fall behind before we’d even really started. That fear kept me pushing through weeks longer than I should have.

What Replaced It, Starting the Next Day

Hands-on math with real objects, letters through games instead of worksheets, and read-alouds instead of a reading program. No curriculum box at all for the rest of that year — just the actual skills, taught the way she could actually receive them.

What Happened to Her Progress

She didn’t fall behind. If anything, she caught up faster once the mornings stopped being a fight, because she was actually available to learn instead of spending her energy resisting.

What I’d Tell a Parent in That Same Morning Right Now

Tears at the table aren’t a sign to push harder. They’re information. A curriculum that isn’t working for your specific kid isn’t a moral failure to fix through sheer persistence — it’s a mismatch worth actually addressing.

For what actually replaced it, our Kindergarten Homeschool: What They Actually Need to Learn This Year post covers the rest.
